Willow Smith has explained the reasons why she isn't a nepo baby despite being the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Willow Smith Rejects 'Nepo Baby' Tag, Says Her Success Isn’t Just Because of Her Parents
Willow Smith has spoken out about claims that her success stems solely from her famous parents, making it clear that they are not the "only reason" she has succeeded.
Recently, the topic of 'nepo babies'—a term for people who are perceived to have leveraged family connections to succeed—has sparked comments from several celebrities, including Zooey Deschanel and Maya Rudolph.
Now, Willow Smith has entered the discussion.
The 23-year-old, formally known as Willow Camille Reign Smith, has made her mark both as a singer and an actor.
She is the daughter of well-known celebrities Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Willow has acted in "I Am Legend" alongside her father.
She has also tackled independent projects like her voice role in "The Lorax."
Her music career began to soar after she released her hit single 'Whip My Hair' in 2010.
This raises a question: Would Willow have found success in these fields without the influence of her celebrity parents?
The debate about labeling Willow a nepo baby has heated up on social platforms.
One user on One X praised: "Jaden and Willow Smith are the most respected nepo babies in my eyes."
However, another user acknowledged: "Yes Willow Smith is a nepo baby, but she’s STILL a prodigy, 2 things can be true at once!"
Amid these discussions, Willow directly addressed the nepo baby label.
In an interview with Allure, she stated her view that she doesn't quite see herself fitting the nepo baby stereotype.
To clarify what 'nepo baby' means, the Oxford Collins Dictionary defines it as:
"The unfair use of power in order to get jobs or other benefits for your family or friends."
Given her parents are Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow reflected on how they've influenced her both personally and professionally.
Speaking with Allure, she asserted her belief in her own unique qualities: "I truly believe I have a strong spirit and would be a weirdo and a crazy thinker no matter who my parents were."
She continued: "I definitely think that a little bit of insecurity has driven me harder because people do think that the only reason I'm successful is because of my parents.
"That has driven me to work really hard to try to prove them wrong. But nowadays, I don't need to prove s**t to anybody."

On a more serious note, she also touched on the challenges she faces related to racial prejudice, despite her privileged background. She noted:
"There have been some experiences where I went into a place that I have worked in the past and my picture could even be up on the wall, and they treat me like, ‘This is a little bit out of your price range’ or ‘You don't really belong here.’ Being Black in America, even with privilege, which I'm never going to deny that I have, you're still Black."
